His father's name was Rif'at Ullah Qureshi and his mother's name was Maqbool-un-Nisa Begum. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Urdu from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, his Master of Arts in Urdu literature from Awadh University, and his Ph.D. (in Urdu on Mushaira) from M.P. Bhoj University. Dr. Rahat Indori worked as a professor of Urdu literature at I.K. College, Devi Ahilya University, Indore, for 16 years. He was the editor of the Urdu quarterly magazine "Shaakhein" for 10 years, published from Indore. Many researchers have earned their Ph.D. degrees on the life and works of Dr. Rahat Indori at various Indian and Pakistani universities. Dr. Rahat Indori's ghazals are included in the Urdu syllabus of Class 9 and 11 of the Maharashtra State Board.
