Rahat Indori

Rahat Indori (1950–2020), born Rahatullah Qureshi, was one of the most popular and influential contemporary Urdu poets, ghazal writers, and Hindi film lyricists. Born and raised in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, he became known for his powerful stage presence, distinctive poetic voice, and poetry that connected deeply with audiences in India and abroad. His poetry combines emotion, social observation, protest, love, longing, and the complexities of everyday life. With direct and memorable language, Rahat Indori brought Urdu poetry to a wide contemporary audience and became one of the most recognisable voices of modern mushairas. He performed extensively across India and internationally and was invited to major literary gatherings around the world. Rahat Indori was also an accomplished academic. He completed his M.A. in Urdu Literature from Bhopal University and earned a Ph.D. in Urdu Literature from Bhoj University for his research on Urdu Mein Mushaira. He taught Urdu literature at Devi Ahilya University, Indore, before becoming widely known for his poetry and public performances. Alongside poetry, he made a significant contribution to Hindi cinema as a lyricist, writing songs for numerous films. His literary works include Dhoop Dhoop, Mere Baad, Paanchwan Darvesh, Rut Badal Gayi, Naraz, and Maujood.
