Three ways in, and the price of each
One of these pays you. The other two are paid for, and both are quoted as a fixed itemised figure before anything starts — there is no line called “miscellaneous”, and nothing is added later.
Trade contract
We pay you. Three percent of submissions get here.
An advance against royalties, on signature
- Advance against royalties, paid on signature
- Full editorial: structural, line and copy
- Original cover commission
- Print, ISBN and global distribution
- Named publicist and a written launch plan
- Royalties for as long as the book is in print
- Editorial control over the final text sits with the house, jointly with you.
Partnership
Shared cost, shared upside, and a much higher royalty.
Fixed, itemised, inclusive of taxes
- The same editorial and design team as a trade title
- Original cover commission
- Print run of 1,000, ISBN and global distribution
- A launch campaign and a named publicist
- 45% royalty on net receipts
- Rights remain entirely yours
- No advance — the higher royalty is the trade.
Independent
You keep everything. We do the work you would rather not.
Fixed, itemised, inclusive of taxes
- Copy-edit and proofread
- Cover design from a commissioned direction
- Typesetting, ebook conversion and ISBN
- Print-on-demand and online retail distribution
- 70% royalty on net receipts
- Rights, files and print files remain yours
- No structural edit, no publicist, no bookshop placement — those are the Partnership.
What none of these include
A guarantee that the book will sell. Nobody can price that, and a house that implies otherwise is selling you the one thing it does not have. What is quoted above is work — editing, design, print, distribution and campaigns — done to a standard you can inspect before you commit, on titles we have already published.
Paying
In instalments, against milestones
Partnership and Independent are paid in three parts: on signature, on approval of the cover, and on delivery of the print files. If the book stops between two of them, you pay for the stage that was finished and not the ones that were not.
