Siddique Aalam

Siddiq Alam (born 1952) is an acclaimed Indian Urdu novelist, short-story writer, playwright, critic, and poet, widely regarded as one of the significant voices of contemporary Urdu fiction. Born in Purulia, West Bengal, and based in Kolkata, he began writing fiction in 1972. His writing is known for its creative originality, historical detail, existential concerns, and imaginative use of magical and fantastic elements. Siddiq Alam has written novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and literary criticism. His notable works include Mare Hue Aadmi Ki Laltain, Nadir Sikkon Ka Box, Bain, Akhri Chhaon, Lamp Jalane Wale, Charnok Ki Kashti, and Cheeni Kothi. His fiction often explores human existence, memory, history, social realities, and the complexities of modern life. His short stories and novels are particularly recognised for combining historical consciousness with fantasy, magical realism, and experimental storytelling. He has also contributed to Urdu theatre and poetry, making his literary work diverse in both form and subject. Several of his stories have been translated into English and other Indian languages, helping introduce contemporary Urdu fiction to a wider readership. Siddiq Alam received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2021 for his short-story collection Mare Huye Aadmi Ki Laltain. This recognition further established his position among the important contemporary Urdu fiction writers of India.
