Shakeb Jalali

Shakeb Jalali (1934–1966), born Syed Hasan Rizvi, was a distinguished Pakistani Urdu poet of the post-Independence era. Though his literary career was brief, he left a lasting impression on modern Urdu poetry through his distinctive style, fresh imagery, and emotionally intense ghazals. Born in Jalal near Aligarh, Shakeb Jalali moved to Pakistan after his early education and became associated with literary magazines, newspapers, and the literary circles of Lahore and Rawalpindi. His poetry reflects love, separation, loneliness, memory, existential uncertainty, and the complexities of human experience. He wrote ghazals as well as nazms, rubaiyat, and qataat, bringing a modern sensibility to traditional Urdu poetic forms. Shakeb Jalali is particularly remembered for the originality and visual richness of his poetry. His verses often transform ordinary images from nature and everyday life into deeply emotional and philosophical expressions. His work helped give the Urdu ghazal a fresh modern tone and continues to be widely read and quoted. His first poetry collection, Roshni Ae Roshni, was published posthumously, while his complete poetic works have been collected in Kulliyat-e-Shakeb Jalali.
