Sarvat Husain

Sarvat Husain (1949–1996) was a distinguished Pakistani Urdu poet associated with the New Wave of modern Urdu poetry. Born and brought up in Karachi, he was admired for his fresh imagery, modern sensibility, and spare yet powerful poetic language. His poetry brought a distinctive new voice to the Urdu ghazal and nazm, combining emotional depth with clarity and originality. Sarvat Husain taught Urdu literature at various government colleges in Pakistan and remained deeply connected with the literary culture of Karachi. His poetry often explores love, loneliness, memory, nature, human relationships, and the uncertainties of existence. His language is remarkably simple and lucid, yet his images and emotional undertones give his poetry considerable depth. He emerged as a poet in the 1970s and became associated with Pakistan's modernist literary movement. His ghazals are known for their spontaneous and engaging quality, while his nazms demonstrate an experimental approach to form, including both free verse and prose poetry. His work is recognised for its originality, emotional honesty, and departure from conventional poetic expression. His two major poetry collections are Aadhe Sayyare Par (1987) and Khakdaan, the latter published posthumously. Although his literary career was cut short by his death in 1996, Sarvat Husain left a lasting impression on contemporary Urdu poetry. His work continues to attract readers for its freshness, lyrical quality, and distinctive modern voice.
