Professor Abdur Rasheed

Professor Abdur Rasheed is an eminent Urdu scholar, linguist, lexicographer, researcher, and bibliophile whose work has made a significant contribution to Urdu language and literary studies. Born in Delhi in 1956, he has devoted his academic career to Urdu linguistics, lexicography, bibliography, classical Urdu texts, and the preservation of rare literary works. Professor Rasheed holds postgraduate degrees in Linguistics and Urdu from the University of Delhi, an M.Phil. in Urdu, and a Ph.D. in Urdu from Jamia Millia Islamia. He taught and conducted research for several decades and retired as Professor in the Department of Urdu at Jamia Millia Islamia. His research focuses particularly on Urdu lexicography, the Urdu script, nineteenth-century Urdu narratives, cataloguing, documentation, and the discovery and editing of rare Urdu texts. Among his important scholarly works is Farhang-e-Kalam-e-Meer (Chiragh-e-Hidayat Ki Raushni Mein), a detailed dictionary of the poetry of Mir. He has also authored and co-edited important bibliographical and linguistic works, including Farsi Mein Hindi Alfaz, Fehrist-e-Kutub Matba Munshi Nawal Kishore, and A Selected Bibliography of Urdu Language and Linguistics. He has also contributed to the multilingual dictionary project Farhang-e-Aryan, covering Persian, Hindi, English, and Urdu. Through his research, teaching, editing, and preservation of rare texts, Professor Abdur Rasheed has played an important role in documenting and strengthening the study of Urdu language and its literary heritage. His scholarship connects classical Urdu literature with contemporary academic research and makes valuable literary resources accessible to researchers and readers.
