Premchand

Munshi Premchand (1880–1936), born Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, was one of the most influential writers of modern Hindi and Urdu literature. Widely regarded as a pioneer of Hindi-Urdu fiction, he transformed the novel and short story into powerful forms of social and realistic storytelling. His writing focused on the lives of ordinary people and explored poverty, social inequality, caste, exploitation, women's rights, rural life, morality, and the struggles of the Indian middle and working classes. Premchand began his literary career in Urdu under the name Nawab Rai and later became widely known as Premchand. His nearly 35-year literary career produced some of the most enduring works of Hindi and Urdu fiction. His celebrated novels include Godaan, Gaban, Karmabhoomi, Rangbhoomi, Nirmala, and Sevasadan, while his short stories include Kafan, Idgah, Poos Ki Raat, Bade Ghar Ki Beti, and Boodhi Kaaki.
