Parveen Shakir (1952–1994) was one of the most influential modern Urdu poets and one of the most distinctive female voices in Urdu literature. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, she became widely known for her fresh poetic expression, emotional depth, and fearless portrayal of women's experiences. Her poetry explores love, longing, separation, loneliness, relationships, identity, and the social realities faced by women. Shakir brought a new feminine perspective to Urdu ghazal and nazm, expressing emotions and experiences that had traditionally remained underrepresented in Urdu poetry. Her simple yet sophisticated language, intimate tone, and innovative use of feminine expression gave her poetry a distinctive place in modern Urdu literature. She was also a teacher, columnist, and civil servant, and worked in Pakistan's Central Board of Revenue.
