Urdu Poet · Agra, Uttar Pradesh
Mirza Ghalib was one of the greatest Urdu poets and a towering figure in the history of Urdu and Persian literature. Born in Agra in 1797, he moved to Delhi at a young age and spent most of his life there. His poetry is known for its intellectual depth, philosophical reflection, complex imagery, wit and distinctive style of expression. Although Ghalib wrote extensively in Persian and considered his Persian writings highly important, his Urdu ghazals made him one of the most celebrated poets in South Asian literary history. He also revolutionised Urdu prose through his letters, replacing the highly formal Persian-influenced style with a more natural, conversational and intimate form of writing. His Diwan-e-Ghalib and Urdu letters remain essential works of Urdu literature. Notable Works: Diwan-e-Ghalib Diwan-e-Farsi Ood-e-Hindi Urdu-e-Mualla Dastanbu Qadir Nama Maikhana-e-Arzu
