Saadat Hasan Manto

Saadat Hasan Manto was one of the most influential Urdu fiction writers and short story writers of the 20th century. Born in Sambarala near Ludhiana in 1912, Manto began his literary career as a translator before establishing himself as a powerful voice in Urdu fiction. His stories focused on ordinary people, marginalised communities, sexuality, violence, poverty and the psychological impact of social and political upheaval. After moving to Bombay, he worked in journalism and the film industry, writing screenplays and dialogues. Following Partition, he migrated to Lahore, where he continued to produce some of his most important Urdu short stories. His uncompromising realism led to several obscenity trials. Today, stories such as Toba Tek Singh, Thanda Gosht, Khol Do, Boo and Kaali Shalwaar are considered classics of Urdu literature.
