Krishn Chander

Krishn Chander was one of the most influential Urdu and Hindi writers of the 20th century and a prominent figure of the Progressive Writers’ Movement. Born in Bharatpur in 1914, he spent much of his childhood in Poonch and later studied at Forman Christian College, Lahore. He wrote extensively about Indian society, poverty, inequality, communalism, human relationships and everyday life. His literary career included dozens of novels and more than 500 short stories, along with essays, sketches, reportage and film scripts. His writing combined romance, social realism, humour and satire, and his works were translated into several Indian and foreign languages. His first novel, Shikast, was published in 1943.
