Khalid Javed is a prominent Indian Urdu novelist, short story writer, literary critic and academic. Born in Bareilly in 1963, he is currently associated with the Department of Urdu at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, where he has taught since 2001. His literary work combines fiction, philosophy and psychological insight, often exploring death, isolation, human existence and the complexities of modern life. His acclaimed novels Maut Ki Kitab and Nemat Khana have established him as an important voice in contemporary Urdu fiction. The English translation of Nemat Khana, published as The Paradise of Food, won the JCB Prize for Literature 2022, becoming the first Urdu novel to receive the prestigious award. His short story Aakhri Dawat has also been included in academic courses at Princeton University.
