Jigar Moradabadi was one of the most celebrated Urdu poets and ghazal writers of the 20th century. Born Ali Sikandar in Moradabad in 1890, he received his early literary guidance from his father, Ali Nazar, and later sought the advice of poets including Dagh Dehlavi and Asghar Gondavi. Jigar became particularly famous for his romantic ghazals, musical style and powerful mushaira recitations. His poetry explored love, beauty, longing, wine and human emotions while retaining the richness of the classical Urdu ghazal tradition. His major poetry collections include Daagh-e-Jigar, Shola-e-Toor and Aatish-e-Gul. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958 for Aatish-e-Gul.
