Intizar Hussain

Intizar Hussain was one of the most influential Urdu fiction writers and novelists of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Born in Dibai, Uttar Pradesh, in 1925, he migrated to Pakistan after Partition and settled in Lahore, where he became associated with journalism and Urdu literature. His writing is deeply shaped by memories of pre-Partition India, migration, loss and the experience of Partition. He is particularly known for blending classical Urdu dastan, mythology, folklore, symbolism and contemporary realities in his fiction. His celebrated novel Basti brought him international recognition and made him the first Urdu writer to be shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2013. His major works also include Aakhri Aadmi, Aage Samandar Hai, Shahr-e-Afsos and Gali Kooche.
