Aftab Hussain

Aftab Hussain is a Pakistani Urdu poet, translator and literary critic who has been living in Austria since 2003. He emerged as a poet in the 1980s and studied Urdu literature at Oriental College, University of the Punjab, Lahore, where he later worked as an assistant professor. He also served as secretary of Halqa-e-Arbab-e-Zauq, Lahore. After leaving Pakistan in 2000, he lived in India before moving to Germany through an invitation from the international writers’ organisation PEN. He later moved to Vienna, where he earned a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Vienna and teaches South Asian literature and culture. His first poetry collection, Matla, established his reputation as a poet. He also translates German literature into Urdu and has translated works by writers including Paul Celan, Georg Trakl and Kafka.
