Aims & scope
The Journal of AI Ethics & Society publishes work on what machine learning systems do to the people they are deployed on. The journal sits between computer science, law, philosophy and the social sciences, and it requires that technical claims be technically correct and normative claims be philosophically serious. Papers that are strong on one and hand-wavy on the other are the most common reason for desk rejection here.
We publish empirical audits of deployed systems, formal work on fairness and accountability, legal and regulatory analysis, and qualitative research on the annotation and moderation workforce. We have a standing interest in deployments outside North America and Western Europe, where most of the world's algorithmic governance now happens and almost none of the literature is set.
The journal is fully open access with no charges to authors. Code and, where ethically possible, data are required for empirical submissions.
